ART COLLECTION PRESERVATION PROJECT

This project involved identifying, conditioning, cleaning, cataloging, and  rehousing a small collection of artwork owned by a history museum (74 total items were reviewed during the process). All works were also assessed against the museum’s mission and selected pieces were recommended for deaccession. Prior to this project, the art collections were housed in cardboard boxes, stacked in a conference room. Each object was fully cataloged and rehoused into proper storage - larger artworks were moved to newly purchased art racks and smaller or less stable works were moved to drawer storage to minimize stress to the frames while protecting the objects from dust.

This process improved the preservation of the collections as a whole by increasing available space, improving storage practices, and removing objects from the collection that were no longer relevant or which had deteriorated beyond repair.
